  6. Set alongside the Propylaea, the temple juts out from the southwestern spur of the Acropoli
  7. s like the prow of a ship, symbolizing the victorious city. Designed by Callicrates, it was begun in 421 BC and not finished until 407, after a long interruption during the years of the war in Sicily. It is a small \b \cf4 \ATXht1107 Ionic\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0  temple with four \b \cf1 \ATXht3 columns\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0  on each front and a frieze with a noteworthy innovation: the subject is not a tale from mythology but a historical event, the battle between the Greeks and Persians at Plataea.\par
